When: August 19, 2009 at 7:30pm
Subject: How Do We Know What Time It Is, Anyway?
Speaker: Jack Welch
Abstract: Jack Welch of the Robert Ferguson Observatory in Sonoma gives a presentation on how we measure time and how time measurement is handled in various astronomy and space situations. Welch will explain how our understanding of time measurement has changed as technology and theory have developed, and will explore some of the special challenges satellites and spacecraft have when it comes to timekeeping. Welch currently teaches the Robert Ferguson Observatory's longstanding and popular "Night Sky" series of classes; and created and runs the unique "Observing Lab" programs that provide intensive telescope observing experiences on specific topics.
