“The Formation and Evolution of Binary Stars”

With nearly 50% of the stars we see in the sky being part of binary systems, binarity and multiplicity of stars is a common phenomenon in the Milky Way Galaxy. With this percentage measured even higher in star-forming regions, the formation of binaries appears to be part of the star-formation process. This talk will discuss the formation of stars and how this process helps us to better understand the prevalence of binary star systems in the Milky Way Galaxy and how modern-day observations of stars and galaxies rely on our understanding of stellar binarity.
Aaron T. Lee is a professor of physics and astronomy at St. Mary’s College of California. He was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Texas Austin, where he worked with Stella Offner. He was a graduate student, National Science Foundation graduate fellow at UC Berkeley and worked with Chris McKee and Steve Stahler. Prior to graduate school, he completed Part lll of the Mathematics Tripos at Cambridge University, and was an undergraduate at Northwestern University.
Aaron views astronomy as a “gateway science”, and is excited for the opportunities to use astronomy as a means of introducing people to the wonders of science and the scientific method.
